Despite mobile firms launching 3G technology, industry analysts believe it’s unlikely to create a major impact in the short term, simply due to the fact that the cost involved (hand set) is too high.

“Also with the mobile technology still relatively new to the average rural Sri Lankan (with low penetration levels) we believe that 3G would show a low impact in the short term,” Bartleet Mallory Stockbrokers (Pvt) Ltd said in a report, but added that it will most certainly be a winning technology in the future.
