    A Poem for the week

A trip on a floating car

Have you ever been on a floating car? Well I have and believe me you wouldn't want to be in one!

It was Saturday, November 18. We were on our way to catch a play at the Lionel Wendt. My mum was driving, I was in the front seat and my sister was in the back. It was pouring with rain and there was thunder and lightning too. We were taking the Horton Place route and it was flooded. My mum couldn't quite see what was ahead of her and she followed a pickup in front. As you may have guessed, we ended up in the flood and the car stopped!
My mum got very worried, so she put her shutter down and asked a person in the truck next to her if he could help us, and he said he wouldn't be able to and off he went.

In the meantime, I felt water coming into the car and I told my mother. The three of us, dressed to kill, had to wade into knee deep water!

We went into the nearest place which we thought was a house, but it was an Ayurvedic Centre. They were very helpful and let us take calls because my mum's and sister's phones were on low battery. They gave us towels because we were soaking wet and I was shivering and would you believe it, every time a vehicle passed by, our car was floating for the force of the water!

Then my mum called my uncle for help, as he was living the closest to us, and he came and got some people and pushed the car to a dry area. He took my sister and me to his home, but my mother had to wait for the Insurance Company people to come and tow the car. My uncle took us to his place and we had a shower and waited till our mum came. My uncle went to pick her up and when she came, it was 10.30 in the night! My aunt made us have some dinner and we stayed the night there. Well so much for the play!
That was the end of my adventure!

Flyers

Flyers fly high, far and wide,
Owls are night flyers,
That hunt mice at night.
Humming birds are small birds,
That fly for nectar in flowers.
A bee, an insect flies,
Making a buzzing sound.
Bats are flying mammals that hang on trees,
Upside down.
Kites can fly high in the sky,
Till we hold the string so tight.
Balloons filled with hot gas,
Fly us to the sky so high.
Jets are flyers that can go so fast,
Can even fly so high in the sky.
Rockets fly astronauts into space.
Flyers! Flyers! How do you see,
The land beneath you?

A Dinosaur

There was this Dinosaur,
That I once saw,
It can jump like a Kangaroo,
And that isn't all it can do.

It is very tall,
And not so small,
He has big paws,
That has sharp claws.

It has a long tail,
But it's hard to go on the trail,
And that's the Dinosaur,
That I saw.

Saturn

Did you know that in 1610, when Galileo Galilei first began to look at Saturn through his homemade telescope, he thought that Saturn's rings were actually two moons! He called these moons "Saturn's Ears." Forty-five years later, the astronomer Christian Huygens realised that these moons were actually a series of beautiful rings, surrounding the planet.

With the photographs provided by the Pioneer and Voyager probes, scientists now know more about these rings than ever before. The rings are made out of dirty snowballs of ice, dust and rock. The Voyager space probes took many pictures of Saturn's rings, showing them to be made up of countless hundreds of ringlets. These have been separated into different divisions. Three of these divisions can be seen from earth. The outer 'A' ring, the bright 'B' ring and the inner 'C' ring. The 'E' ring is the farthest from Saturn, stretching nearly 500,000km (310,000 miles) from the planet. None of the rings is ever more than 1.5km thick.

Christmas

We celebrate Christmas on December 25. Christmas marks the birth of Jesus. We attend midnight mass in the church and also visit the crib to offer gifts to Baby Jesus.

We decorate the Christmas trees in our homes and also make cribs.

It is most important to help the sick and poor people at Christmas. Santa Claus comes on Christmas Day and gives us gifts.

Schools are on vacation during Christmas. Before vacation, some schools have concerts.

We sing carols and dance on Christmas Day. I like Christmas very much.

My pen friend's visit

It was a really amazing and very exciting day for me. My pen-friend Rachel Bowens came to visit me and my family. She is from England. Rachel and I have been pen friends for about eight months. We became more friendly after we met together. There are five members in her family. She has two sisters named Emma and Katie.
Once she wrote to me that she and her family wanted to visit Sri Lanka this year. Suddenly my father got a phone call from Rachel's mother and she had informed my father that they are now in Bentota and they are ready to come and see us. I couldn't believe it. They had been two weeks in Sri Lanka.

We served them a cup of tea and also we had some yummy pineapple slices and some bananas. I showed her the banana flower which has just popped up in our garden. She was really happy to see a real banana flower.
There is a small stream running near our house. I went there with Rachel and her two sisters. The water was very cold. They all enjoyed it very much. When I showed her the King Coconut tree in our garden, she told me that she doesn't like King Coconuts.

Then it was time for them to go. Rachel gave me a sachel bag and some pens and pencils as a present. I also gave her a nice present. Actually we had a really nice time together.
She invited me to come to England to see them all. Then I told her that I really want to see them all in England one day. It was one of the most unforgettable days in my life.
