South African experts help Lanka in groundwater issues

A team of South African experts were in Sri Lanka recently to conduct a workshop on the efficient and effective use of groundwater to support the reconstruction and redevelopment in the Tsunami affected areas and to assist Sri Lanka in meeting the MDGs as part of South-South co-operation.

Under the Tsunami support programme, South Africa has already conducted a number of training sessions to help Geohydrologists at the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) in the latest technology in the location of boreholes in difficult hydro-geological conditions.

The National Training Workshop on Assessment, Evaluation and Management of Groundwater Resources began on December 5 and ended on December 10 at the University of Peradeniya and arranged in collaboration with the Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS), University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka; Institute for Groundwater Studies, University of The Free State, South Africa; National Water Supply and Drainage Board, and the South African Water Sector.
