Sanka’s magical hole in one

Sanka Mederipitiya, popularly known as ‘bantam muscleman’, is fit and smart, resulting from his attachment to the gym at the Hilton, where he is a regular and a member for life.

On Wednesday last week, he got magical when he jet-propelled from the tee at the 13th. Standing short and compact, he swung a beaut 4 wood shot up in the air and dead centre. The ball started moving left when it was captured by a low hanging, slow moving breeze to be coaxed on to the green in front of the cup. From then it was a couple of coughs and the ball snaked its way to disappear into the cup. The caddies took over and went into a baila dance of joy and merriment, until they were directed to stop and amply compensated. His playing partners, Prasanna Goonetilleke, Gihan Wickremasinghe and Nihal Boralessa were quite naturally delighted with their pal’s stunning performance and contributed lavishly at the traditional celebrations later on at the pleasurable 19th hole, when corks flew to the ceiling over cheers and congratulations. He did some autographing later, and drove home with a massive smile on his face.
