A life dedicated to humanity

~ Gunapala (Jathi) Windsor

Gunapala Windsor was a household name in Magalle, Galle, his hometown, for his inspirational dedication to all before self. He was the youngest son of late Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Windsor.

His entire education was at St. Aloysius College, Galle. His career and most dedicated social service began when he was a teacher at All Saints and Richmond Colleges and as the Galle District Scouts Commissioner. The first steps in a long journey began in his village where he was the president of the Magalle youth club and the temple. He then expanded his services to include the Galle District, holding many a founder member position of many organizations including Co-op Hospital Committee, St. John’s Ambulance Brigade etc. His charitable soul was the inspiration for his career. He went on to serve as an executive in numerous non-profitable organizations such as the S.O.S. children’s villages, CINDA, Red Cross and Red Crescent, Netherlands Welcome Village and CCF. He was much sought after for his honesty, integrity and above all his tireless and selfless commitment.
He wrote to newspapers about great personalities, and inspiring stories in the hope it would encourage others to follow suit. Wherever he served, he was admired and appreciated by his colleagues for the consistency with which he upheld his work and personal ethic. Soon after the tsunami, he sacrificed his leisurely retired lifestyle with his children in Australia to return to his beloved hometown of Galle to offer his services once more to people in need.

In the last two years of his life, he was in Galle, amongst the much loved and respected company of his friends, colleagues, beneficiaries and family members including his younger sister Iranganie and Pat de Silva and family and his nephews Indrajith, Santosh and Muditha Windsor. In the final week of his life he was fortunate enough to receive the ultimate tribute a teacher could hope for in being cared for by his pupil, Richmondite Dr. Sarath Gamini de Silva.

His family has fond memories of him as a great human being who dedicated his life for the benefit of others. He is survived by his wife Dr. Dulcy Godawatte Windsor and children Chiran, Sampath and Dr. Apsara Windsor and daughter-in-law Chandrika. May he continue to inspire in all a path of selfless service to humanity till the attainment of Nibbana.
