Marking Buddha Jayanthi with road re-naming

The Buddha Jayanthi Secretariat of the Religious Affairs Ministry had named the week from May 1 to 7 to commemorate the 2550th Buddha Jayanthi year, on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Accordingly there were several programs organised at Pradeshiya Sabha level.

A road in Nuwara Eliya earlier known as Clinic Road was re-named Buddha Jayanthi Mawatha. The unveiling of the new name board took place on May 3.

The chief guest on the occasion was Minister C B Ratnayake. Among those who were present on the occasion, at the invitation of the Mayor Chandana Lal Karunaratne were religious dignitaries, Municipal Commissioner A. Handawalapitiya, the Deputy Mayor and other councillors, District Secretary R.M.B. Ratnayake and Superintendent of Police D. Tennakoon.
