Bridgetines to take to the road with a smile
The Bridgetine Walk 2007 with the motto ‘Walk a mile – Bring a smile’ will commence from the school’s Primary premises on Sunday, June 17. The day’s events will begin with Holy Mass followed by the walk which will end at the college premises. Thereafter a fun fair will be held at the Nomads grounds from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
It was in the year 1902 on February 15 that a school for young girls was opened by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Congregation at the request of the Archbishop of Colombo Rev. Dr. T.A. Melizan, OMI.
St. Bridget’s Convent was thus established in a rented house called ‘The Firs’ on Turret Road, Colombo 7.
As the student population increased the school moved to its present premises on February 7, 1912 with a student population of around 130. As the school grew, new buildings were added and a new Montessori built. This was done with the help of benefactors, the Past Pupils’ Association, the School Development Society, students, parents and teachers.
The theatre hall or auditorium was one such building initiated by Sr. Mary Immaculate. It was completed in 1974 through the efforts of the Past Pupils’ Association and the Parent Teacher Association and declared open by the Superior General of the Good Shepherd Congregation Rev. Sr. Marie Bernadette Fox on June 15, 1974.
The Bridgetine Walk and fun fair is to raise funds to have the auditorium modernised, with the installation of air conditioning and a new lighting system. The Past Pupils’ Association has also made arrangements for all past pupils to make a contribution towards this project by purchasing VIP tickets from any committee member. |
