Workshops for field veterinarians

The second workshop by Frontiers in Reproduction of the Peradeniya University was held in the Southern Province over the weekend. The objectives of these workshops are to update the knowledge of field veterinarians on cattle reproduction, apply new strategies, methods to overcome infertility, repeat breeding in cattle and also the application of new reproductive biotechnologies such as embryo transfer in cattle and goats.

A few workshops have already been conducted in the North Central Province, Southern Province and many veterinary ranges in Sri Lanka.

According to Dr. Basil Alexander, organizer and resource person of these workshops, this new concept is highly appreciated by field veterinarians as the workshops are primarily hands-on training in the field rather than classroom lectures. In addition, these workshops are conducted for Government field veterinarians in small and large groups and in their respective veterinary ranges or Provinces.

The university team hopes to conduct more workshops in all the Provinces. The university provided these services following requests made by field veterinarians. The university group became popular after creating 'Peradeniya Kumari' the first goat born in Sri Lanka from an embryo transfer.
