Few teachers, little English for students

There are only seven English teachers for 32 schools in the Hatton education circuit of the Nuwara Eliya District, the Kandy Times learns.

It is even more shocking to learn that this has been the situation for the past several years with little being done by education authorities, in spite of repeated and frequent appeals by various school development committees. Because of this shortage, the standard of English among the students is very poor, school authorities complain.

When we questioned an assistant director of education about the plight of these students, he passed the buck by saying highups in the Education Department have been alerted of the problem but no remedial action has been taken.
