They're back to tickle and tease
The outrageous fairies that took Colombo by storm last year are back with their wild adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The fairies claim that they have been summoned back from the deep forests of Sri Lanka to tickle, tease and titillate Colombo audiences once more, this time at the British Council Garden from July 12 – 15 at 7.30 p.m.
Pyramus and Thisby was an overwhelming success when it was first performed last year, receiving rave reviews. Indeed, due to the excellent 'word-of-mouth' on the show's success, audiences braved the wet November weather to pack the seats of the show.
Now, due to popular demand, the show hopes to repeat its success at the British Council Garden, which has a tradition of outdoor theatre.
The first run of Pyramus and Thisby was unanimously hailed as a groundbreaking achievement in Sri Lankan theatre.
The show has been described by critics as "a scintillating spectacle… a feast of colour, sound and emotion – a veritable treat for all the senses."
Indeed, critics have even written that "Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream was never so creatively adapted in Sri Lanka," while other critics described the show as "a night to remember… a lasting impression on Sri Lankan theatre… a theatrical success."
The play is a magical blend of Shakespeare's verse, exciting dance and music from low-country Sri Lanka. Pyramus and Thisby boasts a stellar cast of actors, professional dancers, acrobats and musicians. The performance comes alive at the magical outdoor venue which transports the audience to a bygone era, as well as a world of the supernatural, making the production a spectacular experience for the entire family. Jehan's talented production team includes lighting maestro Thushan Dias and Avanti Perera on the keyboard.
The producers state that this rerun is for all those who missed the show the first time as well as their fans who have been clamouring to see it again. So make a date with Pyramus and Thisby and experience a night to remember. Tickets will be available at the British Council from June 25. |
