State quarterly reports on web

By Malik Gunatilleke

The public would soon have access to quarterly reports submitted by State institutions through the website launched on Friday by the Plan Implementation Ministry. Speaking at the launch Ministry Secretary Mrs. D.S. Wijayatilake said the site was launched to cut down the cumbersome paper work exchanged by ministries as well as to improve the efficiency of all the ministries in submitting their quarterly reports.

The website allows the Ministries to input their capital expenditure as well as their various development projects directly to the Plan Implementation Ministry which enables them to keep to a certain time frame. The public will be able to view the reports of any one of the Government ministries as part of the Government’s transparent governance policy as proposed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

This move was made after some Ministries failed to submit their quarterly reports on time. Many of the Ministry Secretaries present at the launch said keeping to the deadline proposed would be near impossible as there was too much data to be collected in such a short time.

However, Mrs. Wijayatilake said it was imperative these deadlines were kept to run an efficient Government according to the President’s Mahinda Chinthana. Most of the Government Ministries will now work according to a deadline by which they must submit their reports within one week of the end of the quarter. However, some ministries like the Health Ministry, which are undertaking many development projects will be granted a longer period of time.

The website will be fully functioning by September 1 but the public can read Ministry quarterly reports only when they are submitted by the end of September
