Accused of offering bribe to PC

A man who attempted to offer a bribe of Rs. 500 to a policeman at the Hantane police check-point was given cash bail of Rs. 5000 with a surety bond of Rs. 100,000 by Kandy Acting Magistrate Upali Bogahapitya.

In this case Inspector Jinadasa of Kandy Crimes Division produced S.M.Riskan of Welamboda for having offered a bribe to PC Samarasinghe of Kandy Police at the Hantane check-point when the suspect’s three-wheeler was checked.

Attorney Senarath Galkadawa told Court that in his excitement at the check-point, the suspect had inadvertently offered an old insurance certificate folder to the constable. He said this was a bona fide mistake. However, court was told the suspect had offered Rs 500 when his three-wheeler was being checked.

The magistrate then ordered bail for the suspect and postponed hearing for November 29. Senarath Galkaduwa with attorney-at-law Hirantha Herath appeared for the suspect.
