Leona storming the charts

Music News By Miles Brohier

A storm hit the UK chart as Leona Lewis zoomed on the top of the singles chart with "Bleeding Love," a powerful R'n'B ballad. The 22-year-old X-Factor winner of December last year, thus notched up her second consecutive UK chart topping song.

The London born singer sold 220,000 copies on download to register the best selling song for 2007. Mind you the figure covers only one week's sale following Leona's first UK live performance of "Bleeding Love" at the first X Factor show of this season. As a result of the media coverage she has been receiving in recent weeks even her first No:1 song "A Moment Like This," from Christmas last year has been selling in bucket loads, now totalling a dizzy 800,000 copies.

"Bleeding Love" is taken from Leona's debut album 'Spirit' that will be out on November 12. We also learn that Lewis will switch on London's Oxford Street Christmas lights on November 7, which will be on for nine weeks. The group Westlife and the West End cast of Mary Poppins will perform at the switch ceremony.

Take That, the reunited band entered the UK top 20 at 2 climbing from 46 with "Rule The World." It's the fourth single to be taken from the former boy band's current album 'Beautiful World.' The first two songs from the album, "Patience" and "Shine," topped the chart. The last single "I'd Wait For Life" peaked at 17 and the current "Rule The World" is at No:2. Between 1991 and 1993 Take That picked up five top 20 entries. What came next was a massive swing in popularity with the group scoring four consecutive No:1 songs between 1993 and 94 only to be interrupted by one track that peaked No:3.

Meanwhile Take That was reduced to three members for a concert in Vienna in Austria on Friday, October 26 after one of the members was hospitalised. Howard Donald was hospitalised following a chest injury he sustained at an earlier show. He wanted the group to perform even with three members and not disappoint fans. Their reunion sparked a lot of interest in the group contributing to the success of the current Beautiful World tour named after the album. The tour will end on November 26, in Manchester, England.

McFly would have been generally assured of a No: 1 song since all except two have been held up inside the top 20. One of those tracks is the current single "The Heart Never Lies," from their greatest hits collection. It appears "The Heart Never Lies" has outsold McFly's last big hit but not enough in sales to more past Take That the might Leona Lewis single.

The Oasis single at No:10 "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" is not an official release from the band. It is featured in a documentary DVD that covers the Oasis tour that was undertaken to promote the album 'Don't Believe The Truth.' The single "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" has simply been taken off download and made a chart success for the Manchester band.

Duran Duran of one of the 80's most popular bands has had the video for their new single "Falling Down" banned on TV in the UK. The video is the promo to the first single from the band's new album 'Red Carpet Massacre' that is due for release on November 19. The video has been deemed controversial. Duran Duran will now release a tamer clip for the song. "Falling Down" will be out on November 12.

Justin Timberlake has made a donation of $110,000 to the late Steve Irwin's environmental charity Wildlife Warrior while on a concert tour of Australia. Timberlake made the donation in Brisbane on October 27. Ten Cents was contributed from each ticket sold on the tour. Timberlake had met Irvin on an earlier tour of Australia

Porter Wagoner the country singer who helped launch the career of Dolly Parton died of lung cancer in Nashville, US on October 28, aged 80. He had selected Parton as a duet partner in 1967 when she only 17-years-old. She split with Wagoner in 1974 to go solo. It is said she wrote "I Will Always Love You" for Wagoner. The song eventually became a global hit for Whitney Houston in 1992-93.
