Sujata Jayawardena Memorial Oration
The 4th annual Sujata Jayawardena Memorial Oration will be delivered by Judge C.G. Weeramantry, on Thursday November 15, at the BMICH. The event is organised by the Alumni Association of the University of Colombo.
Judge Weeramantry will speak on the topic, “Traditional Global Wisdom on Environmental Protection.” The lecture will deal with the much neglected wisdom of the world’s religions and of various world traditions in regard to environmental protection. Whether one looks at the religions of the world or the systems of traditional law, the protection of the environment is an important part of their teachings. Yet this enormous source of wisdom is neglected and largely unknown to modern legal systems. Under the influence of modern legal concepts emphasizing rights, the environment and earth resources are being damaged and depleted as never before.
Judge Weeramantry, a legal practitioner, a Judge of the Supreme Court, a Professor of law in Australia and a Judge and Vice President of the International Court of Justice has worked intensively on the interface area between law and the other disciplines – science, medicine and religion to name a few. He was recently awarded the UNESCO prize for Peace Education and the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize) for 2007.
