Bringing honour to their motherland, the acclaimed Sri Lankan all-male choral group, “The Revelations”, won a gold medal and emerged champions in the Gospel and Spiritual category at the 1st Asian Choir Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia from November 1-10.
The Revelations overcame stiff competition from several other larger choirs from the Asian and Australasian region as well as from the Russian Federation.
The choir also won a silver medal in the Sacred Music category (Musica Sacra) in addition to winning a gold diploma and becoming category champions in the male vocal ensemble category in the Asian Open section at the same event.
This is the first time a Sri Lankan choral group has won a gold medal at such a prestigious international music event. They competed in three categories - Gospel and Spiritual, Musica Sacra and Male Vocal Ensemble.
Leader of the Revelations Sanjeev Jayaratnam said that this success marked the first step of the groups target -striking gold at the World Choir Games- (The Choir Olympics) to be held in Graz, Austria in July 2008. The Revelations comprise Ishan de Lanerolle, Rohan de Lanerolle, Mahen Peiris, Charith Peiris, Asanka Perera, Enaksha Fernando, Sanjeev Jayaratnam and Srimanthaka Senanayake.
Well known in Colombo’s entertainment circles, The Revelations have performed at leading corporate events. They also held a series of sell-out concerts this year. Members of the group also launched The Revelation’s Academy of Performing Arts and Creativity earlier this year to bring music to a wider audience. |
