Fifteen ‘Rising Suns’ at STC Matale

“History of this school reveals that it has been in the forefront of sports activities having excelled in Hockey, Athletics, Cricket, Cadetting and now in Rugger. The secret behind this success is the strong foundation laid by the school to identify and develop the talents of the students and guide them to triumphs”, so said the chief guest K.W.U.B. Weragama, former Principal of St. Thomas’ College, Matale (1988-1996) at the annual colours awards ceremony held recently at the College Auditorium.
He further said that he was happy to see this colourful event that was started during his period, to bring together all the current sportsmen on to one stage to celebrate a year of achievement, has gone from strength to strength improving from year to year.
Seventy sportsmen received colours for their achievements.
'Rising Sun' is the highest award and there were fifteen recipients for this prestigious award.
L.H. Malith Priyal De Silva was adjudged as the most outstanding sportsman of the year (2006-07) for his excellent performances in Athletics, Cricket and Rugger.
Alex David (Tea Taster Stassen Exports Ltd), another old Thomian graced the occasion as the guest of honour.

Mannar beat Matale
Led by J. Daniel Diron, Mannar District beat Matale District by 4 goals to one in their FFSL conducted ‘Eveready Cup’ Junior Inter-league soccer encounter conducted at the Bernard Aluvihare Stadium, Matale on Saturday November 17th.
Mannar led 2-0 at half time with K. Dileepan scoring the first goal in the 20th minute followed by M. Pius, the second goal in the 30th minute. The second half saw two more goals, added to their first half tally by R. Edison and Jerrad Duke claiming a goal each.
The loser’s solitary goal was booted by R. Roshan.
M. Ravindran controlled the match.
Gunatilake stars for Royal
A fine double by H.P. Gunatilake who captured 4 wickets for 23 runs and then went on to knock 62 helped Polonnaruwa Royal College to post an easy four wicket win over Wayamba Royal, Kurunegala in their Unders-15 Division 3 interschool semi-final cricket fixture conducted recently at the Dambulla Central Grounds, Dambulla. Wayamba Royal batting first made 153 all out in 37.3 overs. In reply Polonnaruwa Royal reached the target in 32.5 overs losing six wickets in the process.
