Truong Thanh Hang breaks Games record

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand: Vietnam's Truong Thanh Hang broke her second Southeast Asian Games record in two days when she won the women's 800 meters on the track Saturday.

Hang added to her victory in the 1,500 meters on Friday, winning the 800 in 2.02.39 ahead of compatriot Vu Thi Trang and Myanmar's Myint Myint Aye.It was one of three Games records set in athletics Saturday.

Indonesia's Triyaningsih smashed the women's 5,000 meters record to win in 15.54.32, taking almost 15 seconds off the old mark.And in the men's hammerthrow, Arniel Terrera of the Philippines set a new record of 60.98 meters, extending his old mark by 51 centimeters.

Hosts Thailand dominated the first day of track and field, but it was a more even spread of gold medals on Saturday.Vietnam was best with four: Hang, Van Huyen Vu in the decathlon, Dinh Cuong Nguyen in the men's 800 meters and defending champion Bui Thi Nhung in the women's high jump.

Terrera's win was one of three for the Philippines, along with Rene Herrera who knocked seven seconds off his season best in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, and Marestella Torres, who claimed the women's long jump with her last leap.Indonesia collected two golds thanks to Triyaningsih and Dwi Ratanawati in the women's discus.

Malaysia won its gold by holding on to win the men's 4x400-meter relay in a blanket finish ahead of Thailand and the Philippines, with the medalists seperated by just over half a second. AP
