Sherene in action |
Her track record is absolutely impeccable ever since she started her tennis career at the tender age of 7 years playing mini tennis, under the guidance of her first coach Mr Ganendran Subramaniam. Sherene Wijesingha, a student of Bishop's College, showed tremendous talent that was to convince everybody she would soon emerge as a shining star in the galaxy of tennis.
In 2005 she was ranked No. 1 in the Sri Lanka Girls under 12 category, and more than justified the trust and confidence the Sri Lanka Tennis Association had in her. She emerged runner-up in the MPP/Milo Junior Tennis open championship held in Malaysia in 2005. In the same year she was also awarded the S. Gunaratne Challenge Trophy for Girls U-12 at the Otter Aquatic Club open Tennis Tournament.
Sherene carried on her excellent form in Tennis during the 2006 season where she was ranked No. 1 in the Girls under 14 category and went on to annex the No. 1 spot winning the Bandarawela Tennis Club, Otter Aquatic Sports Club, 91st Clombo Championship, Y.M.C.A Tennis Club, and Hilton Tennis Gala. She also took part in the Asian Tennis Federation U-14 series sponsored by the Australian open and held in Colombo. Sherene gave a very creditable performance in the three tournaments she played in and was placed 7th, 9th and 5th competing against top class foreign opposition.
The year 2007 saw Sherene prove beyond doubt that like in any other sport, form is temporary but class is permanent when she became the National Champion in both the singles and doubles in the U-14 category at the Junior National Championship. She also went on to win the 92nd Colombo Championship of the Cosmopolitan Tennis Club and was a member of the S.L.T.A. women's team and won the women's championship defeating SSC. She was also a member of the U-19 Bishop's College tennis team that annexed the All-Island Schools Championship last year. Sherene also took part in the International Tennis Federation sponsored U-14 Asian Championship group 2 held in Pakistan and her performance in being placed 4th overall was recognized when she became the only player from Sri Lanka to be selected to represent the I.T.F. U-14 team which toured Indonesia which was a group 1 tournament. In the A.T.F. tournaments held in Colombo sherene went on to win the doubles and was placed 3rd in the singles event in the U-14 category. She has toured India, Syria and Jordan where she was runner-up in the doubles event and also Bangladesh and Bahrain. She capped it all by becoming the 8th best player in Asia in her age group which resulted in her being the only Sri Lankan selected by Tennis Australia to tour Australia with the Asian Tennis Federation U-14 team which comprises 5 Indians, 1 Malaysian and 1 Philippine player other than herself, commencing 8th January 2008. |
