SAF gets leaner

Hemasiri Fernando

The Biannual South Asian Federation Games scheduled to be held in November has been postponed to February 2008. Officials of the organizing committee in the host nation Bangladesh have stated that in addition the number of disciplines will be reduced to 15 from 20.

Chairman of the National Olympic Council (NOC) Hemasiri Fernando speaking to The Sunday Times said: “First Bangladesh wanted to postpone the games indefinitely. I told them if they could not host the games India should be given the opportunity because India is next in line. The SAF Games must be held every two years. As it there have been too many postponements. We are attending a meeting on February 22 in Bangladesh to finalize the disciplines. But their officials have already told us the number of disciplines will be reduced. Thus there may be 12 to 13 disciplines as Bangladesh as the host nation can select two disciplines.”

Fernando said in conclusion: “The reason why they cannot have the games in November is because elections have been scheduled. That is not a problem because obviously it means the games will be postponed by only three months as opposed to a year or two.”
