You are important!!
By Dr. Solomon Tutu
A few days ago I heard a guy say bitterly to his boss, "You are the boss around here. I have to do all the dirt you leave behind. I am nobody."
If anyone feeling this same way happens to read this, I want to say to him or her: "This is for you – because you are important."
What makes you say "I'm of no importance; just a cog in the machine?" There is many a person doing your kind of job who is proud of his or her responsibilities. There are also many people who do their job knowing that their superiors are dependant on the tasks they carryout on a daily basis, in order to see the smooth functioning of the work place.
Who has pulled you down so much that you think yourself a nobody? Who has hurt you so badly in your self-esteem that you have never recovered from the blow? Who made you wish the earth would swallow you up? Who laughed at your peculiarities, so that you have felt different ever since? These are serious inquiries… because I am sure you are of infinite value.
Remember the insufferable shame you felt, the sense of complete isolation? From that horrible moment, life became different. The sun in your sky blackened. There was no hope anymore. You became different. Others could do well and get there, but not you.
Then remember how you went right into a shell in your little personality. This was the one retreat left to you. You could hide in your inner self and comfort yourself with tears and lonely solace. Indeed, here you could build up your life castle of cynicism where you might pity the fools who were superficial enough to become ambitious. Here you could let the others go forward. Let them enjoy themselves and you could watch and sometimes envy and sometimes laugh and criticize and hate. Here, in this personnel space, you could feed on your own bitterness.
But life passes away very quickly. One day, you wakeup from kind of a dream and realise you don't count. As far as you can see, there is never any possibility of you counting, depression sets in and you say: "I'm a cog in the machine. A nobody, that's what I am." The key question that remains unanswered is… can anything be done about it even now? Here are few simple suggestions I have which might help you.
1. Stop being a pessimist and start being an optimist
This is not easy as it sounds. The secret cynicism that may have gone on for years tends to breed laziness, envy and even self-pity.
In time one can, by habit, get to like the taste of their hate and humiliation.
Easy or not, this kind of thinking must stop and a new approach must take its place.
Start changing all that. Start by getting out of your shell and moving with the rest of the world. Remember you have the same number of fingers and toes as everyone else.
Remember you came to this world the same way as the greatest men you ever heard of. Accept yourself right now as a worth while human being.
Block out all negative thoughts that has surrounded you for sometime and start thinking positive.
2. Adopt a new physical
attitude
If you have a habit of walking with nervous rush, then deliberately pull yourself up and walk leisurely. Tread as if you owned the world. If on the other hand, your habit is to lag behind – a person who has always been exhausted and has always had to give in – then stride forward with courage as if you are the majestic lion that roams the Savannah.
3. Get a fresh outlook
on your job
Don't care whether your job is to wash dishes in a café or to clean the public toilets, you are important. No matter what people say be proud to do what you do because your job is of certain significance. No job is unimportant. I once heard a mother say that she was "fed up with just looking after little children." And yet this woman has one of the most vital, delicate and responsible jobs in the world.
4. Build a philosophy of life that is big enough
The more one retracts into the shell of their hopelessness, the less they see and know of life. So the ultimate solution is facing challenges and fears. By that a feeble person evolves and becomes stronger. Remember that we have been brought to this earthly plane to fulfil certain tasks. To make our selves useful for the betterment of humanity, and I for one welcome the challenge.
So be proud to be alive. And when you wakeup every morning wakeup with the will to survive, because,
You are important! |
