Your just dessert

By Tharangani Perera, Pix by M.A Pushpa Kumara

It's the early 1920's. The air is thick with the feel of gangster arrogance. The sun has set and the dancers have begun. With the Italian mobster Fat Sam dominating the illegal sarsaparilla trade, everything seems to run like clockwork at the Grand Slam Speakeasy, the hottest nightspot in downtown New York…… until,

A new gang of hoodlums threaten Fat Sam's empire, armed to the teeth with spanking new futuristic weapons of terror…. The sarsaparilla empire begins to fall as the suave and sinister rival gangland leader and pioneer of the "Splurge Gun" Dandy Dan cleanses the city of Fat Sam's hapless goons in his struggle for power. The big city is turned into a state of chaos where betrayal and whipped cream are rife. There is only one hope left.

"….He's a sinner, Candy-coated
For all his friends, he always seems to be alone
But they love him….Bugsy Malone…."

Enter smooth-smooth talking city slicker Bugsy Malone; every girl's dream, every cop's nightmare. As each side fights for supremacy, Bugsy becomes the mastermind behind Fat Sam's war-schemes. The air is thick with the feel of gangster warfare. The mobsters stand at attention, equipped with custard pies and Splurge Guns.

Splat! Grab your umbrellas and dive for cover, ladies and gentlemen, as Junior Workshop Players bring you Bugsy Malone, a pie-flinging musical with a twist. The 59 member cast includes young thespians aged 6-16, whose performance is honed to perfection by the man in the director's chair Jerome, who says,

"The dedication and the standard of acting of these children are extremely high. Everyone works as a team and supports each other. During the week, all I do is look forward to the weekend rehearsals. Putting this production together has been a pleasure."

A classic gangster musical set in the prohibition era, Bugsy Malone where the guns have been replaced with custard pellet guns and the bullets with custard cream. Caught at the heart of a power struggle between Fat Sam and Dandy Dan is congenial chancer Bugsy Malone, who is simply trying to survive, get the girl and earn some respect.

As he rises to the top of New York Mafia, Bugsy falls for Blousey Brown, an aspiring songbird at Fat Sam's speakeasy. His designs on her are upset by the sultry femme fatale nightclub songstress Tallulah who wants Bugsy for herself. The Junior Workshop Players take you on a journey through early 20th century New York as Bugsy strives to help Fat Sam shield his empire from the deadly Dan and his shameful tricks.

Backed by a catchy soundtrack and exultant dancing, Fat Sam will amuse, Dan will terrorize, Tallulah will enrapture and the detectives trip over each other to keep the audience entertained, all the while dodging the custard pies that randomly whiz past their ears.

As each side fights for supremacy, the custard starts flying. Will Dandy Dan cream off the opposition? Will Fat Sam be converted to a giant Banana Split? Will the good guys and the bad guys end up stuck to each other in a sticky finale, or will they get their just desserts? Come on down to Lionel Wendt on a day of your choice between February 13-16, because…

"….Anybody who is anybody will soon walk through that door, at Fat Sam's Grand Slam Speakeasy always able to find you a table there's room for just one more, at Fat Sam's Grand Slam Speakeasy…." We guarantee you will leave the theatre singing the songs!
