Simple, exciting and fun
By Madhushala Senaratne
The beautiful Sita is abducted by the evil Ravana, the King of Lanka. Rama, her fearless husband comes to her rescue with the help of the loyal monkey Hanuman.
Over the years, the epic tale, Ramayana has captured the hearts of many, and shaped art and culture in the Indian subcontinent. Most often we tend to think of it as a simple love story where we can even learn a bit of history. However, as the students of Elizabeth Moir School would reveal to you next week, this ancient legend is more than the story of two lovers kept apart against their will.

"This particular version of The Ramayana has some new and interesting aspects to this ancient legend. It's a modern script and even if you know the story, this is something different," says Lucky Attygalle who will be directing the play.
The play depicts the difficulties that one would encounter when moving towards modernization from traditional customs and cultures. The monkey, by believing in himself is able to grow into a fearless leader who heads a powerful army. The play also tells of trust and promises within a marriage and helps the audience understand the irrational actions of a man, who behaves in such a manner as he is overwhelmed and controlled by his love for a woman.
"This play is something everyone knows. But our version is funny, exciting and simple which makes it easier for the kids to understand and get in to the play", Lucky says, adding that the monkey looks absolutely cute.
Siddharth Kotian and Sheyann Kerner will be playing the role of Rama and Sita respectively. Rama's courageous brother Lakshman will be played by Sakshin Haran.
