Caliban's spectacular rebellion!
Colombo is all a buzz with a rebellion that is just days away! The creators of the hilarious Pyramus & Thisby now present a magical romance, filled with intrigue and comedy – Caliban's Rebellion, which will ignite the boards of the Punchi Theatre.
Designed and directed by Jehan Aloysius, the production is a spectacular supernatural fantasy by CentreStage Productions. The magical performance is constructed from the sub-plot of Shakespeare's romantic masque, The Tempest. This radical adaptation, which is set in the West Indies, features Afro-Caribbean influenced dance, music and mask rituals. There is also a generous dose of hilarious physical comedy as well as Shakespeare's most lyrical poetry. The producers assure us that the entire venue will have an atmosphere of suspense and magic.
As Jehan explains, "The narrative of Caliban's Rebellion makes Caliban more Machiavellian in his nationalist struggle against his master Prospero. Moreover, it explores a possible blood-link between Prospero, Miranda, Caliban and his mother Sycorax. In a sense, this work of devised theatre attempts to answer certain puzzles of The Tempest and presents an alternative history to Caliban."
The cast includes Vishvamithra Ahangama and Shehan Wijemanne as the comical duo Trinculo and Stephano respectively, as well the versatile Tanya Senaratne as the nimble Ariel. Rehan Almaida plays the wizard Prospero, while Anabella Brochard plays Miranda. The role of Caliban will be brought to life by the talented newcomer, Amesh De Silva.
Caliban's Rebellion will feature the troupe's unique style of story telling, which includes their trademark elements of dance, acrobatics and audience interactivity. Mystical spirits, exciting choreography and state-of-the-art lighting make the show a night to remember for the entire family. The original music is composed and performed by Jehan Aloysius, while wizard behind the lights will be Thushan Dias. YES FM and MTV are the Electronic Media Sponsors.
So don't miss Caliban's Rebellion, which will dazzle audiences at the Punchi Theatre, Borella from February 21 – 24 at 7.30 pm (possibility of an extra show on the 25th). A limited number of tickets, priced at 500/-, 750/- & 1000/-, are now available at the venue. |
