Several security related programmes to educate people, including school children, on the need to be vigilant in the wake of increasing terrorist attacks on civilian targets, were carried out, Nuwara Eliya police said.
At a meeting held at the District Secretariat last week Nuwara Eliya SP Gamini Maturata said there was information that the LTTE was attempting to infiltrate the area to strengthen its activities there.
He said 74 LTTE suspects who were taken in by the Nuwara Eliya police in recent weeks and produced before Courts and subsequently released due to lack of evidence were being kept under surveillance as there was a possibility some of them had links with the LTTE.
He also said there were 540 persons staying in Nuwara Eliya who were not residents and they too were being kept under scrutiny.
He said the Police carried out programmes in some schools in the district to educate children on how to identify explosives and suspicious parcels and added these programmes are to be extended to all schools in the district. |
