World Book Day at British Council
By Madhushala Senaratne
In order to celebrate World Book Day, the children's section of the British Council, Colombo, organized a painting session for its library members between 8 and 15 years, on Saturday, March 8, 2008.
Around 100 children painted their favourite book characters and animals on fabric panels. These colourful paintings were later hung as banners on pillars within the library premises giving visitors and others members an opportunity to see at first hand the talent and ability of the children.
Later in the day, a reading game called 'Wild Read' was also held for the children, where a collection of books on wildlife and animal conservation was read.
Although the World Book Day is celebrated on different days in different countries throughout March, Sri Lanka celebrates it on March 6 along with the UK. A range of events are held by the British Council each year to mark this day and these events are aimed at promoting reading and writing among children. |
