PBJ told to provide affidavit on public office furore
2008-10-08 12:52:32

Former Treasury Secretary Dr.P.B. Jayasundera was ordered by the Supreme Court on Wednesday to furnish an affidavit proving that he doesn’t hold public office and any 'share' in a company where the government has a substantial interest, court officials said.

This came when the once-powerful official appeared in court to explain whether or not he is still a public officer as defined in the Constitution. He was asked to also declare that he was apologising to court for continuing as Treasury Secretary even after the judgment was delivered. The affidavit must be presented to court by October 20.

The requirement to include in the affidavit that he doesn't hold any shares in a company controlled by the government came after lawyers for the petitioners said Dr Jayasundera held 'one' share in some state companies. This apparently applied to holding 'one share' in Mihin Lanka along with other senior government officials. .
