National Thoroughfares Bill passed amidst protest by Opposition MPs

Opposition MPs except the National Freedom Front (NFF) protested in Parliament against the National Thoroughfares Bill which was passed today evening.
Opposition MPs stated that through the Act would violate the 13th amendment of the constitution as roads and highways belonging coming under local authorities would be transferred to the Government.
Transport Minister denying the fact said that the permission of the Attorney General had been obtained and that the AG had informed that this act would not violate any part of the constitution.
Opposition MPs’ also pointed out that through the act a number of levies and fees are included.
The Act replacing the 1861 National Thoroughfares ordinance would provide for the planning, design, construction, development and maintenance and administration of an integrated public road network including the provincial councils and local authorities. |
