60 km human chain protest underway in Chennai

Thousands of people gathered in Chennai today to participate in a 60-km-long human chain demonstration to highlight the plight of Tamils caught up in the war in Sri Lanka.

The demonstration organized by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhakam (DMK) was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mutuvel Karunanidhi.

Supporters of the DMK, the Communist Party and other DMK allies joined the demo while the Congress Party, which is a DMK ally, said it extends its “moral support”.

The AIADMK and its ally MDMK led by Vaiko, who is in remand now on sedition charges, did not participate. Also did not join the demo was the BJP
