Hindu priest shot dead by unknown gunman

An unknown gunman shot and killed a Hindu priest at a kovil (Hindu temple) in eastern Batticaloa town early this morning, the Media Centre for National Security said.

The ‘poosari’ (priest) Subramaniam Kamalraj was walking to his residence – also in the same complex – at 1.30 am from the Sivamuthu Mari Amman kovil when shots were fired by the gunman with a T-56 weapon, critically wounding him.

He died on the way to hospital, the Centre said. .
