Soldiers gun down hapless Havelocks |
By Harry Jayachandra |
Army overran Havelocks by 34 points (two goals, one try and five penalties) to nil in their first round Caltex first round inter club league rugby match played at Havelock Park yesterday.
Former Captain of Sri Lanka and coach of Havelocks, Hisham Abdeen speaking to The Sunday Times after the game said; “What could I do? We lost eleven players to other clubs. In fact two players who trained with us on Monday crossed over to Police. And we are also without our Captain Wasim Thajudeen who has not recovered from a knee injury he suffered in the club sevens tournament.”
Army’s seemingly ageless stand off Kapila Knowlton was without doubt the man of the match. After hitting the left upright with a penalty in front of the posts, Knowlton made up for it sending three through the middle to give Army a nine points to nil lead at lemons.
Such was Army’s dominance of possession and territory that Havelocks got close to their opponents line only twice in the entire first half. Army’s final tally could have been a lot more had their ball handling been better. The victors made the line breaks and were the better team by far.
Havelocks started showing some enterprise only in the second half and thus opened up a rather error strewn and dour match. But it was their opponents who capitalized of some bad defending. Knowlton slotted two more penalties, converted two tries – one of them a penalty try and the other scored by Hooker W. M. A. Jayalal. Army’s wing three quarter J. M. Abeyratne touched down under the posts in the closing stages.
Referee – Nizam Jamaldeen
Yellow Cards; Zakir Badurdeen and Kavinda Jayasena (Havelocks). T. A. A Asiri (Army). |
