AAASL launches “Kids Athletics”

The Amateur Athletics Association of Sri Lanka has just launched a new programme called “Kids Athletics” under a new IAAF concept.

According to AAASL Secretary Prema Pinnawela under this new concept of ‘catch them young’ they will be looking at kids from the ages of 6 to 12 with the main focus on the ages between 8-12.

Speaking to The Sunday Times on the new programme Pinnawela said “This is programme that the IAAF has put a lot of emphasis on this programme. We already have trained two athletic coaches in this concept where they underwent a two week programme at the IAAF facility in Indonesia. In turn they have trained 35 other local coaches from around the island. Initially the programme was launched in Kalutara, Kurunegala and Kegalle.”

Pinnawela explained that first they selected 250 kids from this age group and then pruned it down to 40. Then the kids were brought down to Colombo for a 1½ day programme. In this programme he said the kids will be taught the mere basics in different athletics forms and then get them to focus on different disciplines where they show a special aptitude.

He said “For instance if a kid shows special skill in throwing then they will be guided and nurtured in that line till they reach the real competitive age”.

At the same time the coaches who undergo this programme will be given the Level 1 IAAF certificate in Kids training.
