Court Martial verdict a black mark on our history: UNP

The UNP has strongly condemned the Court-Martial ruling against retd. General Sarath Fonseka and said it was deeply shocked by the severity of the sentence.

“The Government has placed a black mark on the history of this country by muddling politics with the value and prestige of military leaders by allowing this kind of situation,” the UNP said in a statement yesterday.

The UNP said the service rendered by General Fonseka to destroy the LTTE cannot be forgotten. “There were many in the government who said that General Fonseka was a well disciplined officer suitable to lead any army in the world. He has been victimized only because of his decision to enter politics,” the statement added.

The UNP added that the actions of the government were shameful given the manner in which it was molly-coddling the one time LTTE financier Kumaran Pathmanathan alias K.P. while the man who destroyed the LTTE was being treated in this manner.

The statement added that a majority of the people were against this verdict.
