I have been bird watching since
I was seven years old, and I have
thoroughly enjoyed it. It is an
interesting, fun hobby that you can start from your own garden.
It doesn’t need much gear and costs nothing to begin with and you will have ample opportunity to learn about these beautiful creatures.
Bird-watching is the art of
watching birds in their wild habitat, without disturbing them. It is a
wonderful, joyful art and so simple, you can do it from your own garden.
Sri Lanka is a great place to do this, because it has a larger amount of interesting birds than some other countries. If you are considering being a serious birdwatcher, you may be interested in places to do
this other than your garden. One
particular place that is very good for birds is Thalangama Tank.
Thalangama Tank is a
little-known wetland in the middle of Colombo. It is a great place to find a variety of animals.
Many birds inhabit the tank, including the pheasant-tailed jacana, a medium-sized bird that can walk on water lilies. The trees around the road are home to birds like the beautiful Asian paradise
flycatcher.
The water monitor is a kind of lizard that is very common at Thalangama Tank. It can be seen swimming in the tank or crossing the road.
Some interesting mammals
also inhabit the tank, like the
endangered western subspecies of the purple-faced leaf monkey. Squirrels are also very common around the tank.
To get to Thalangama Tank, go to Parliament Lake and then down J.C.Wijesinghe Road. At the end of the road, go down Lake Road. You will eventually come to Thalangama Tank.
