Lyceum Wattala overall champions at ISAC 2015
View(s):Lyceum International School Wattala stretched their dominance in the field of track and field as they snatched the overall championship of the International Schools Athletic Championship (ISAC) 2015 for the eighth occasion at the Sugathadasa Stadium last weekend.
The 15th ISAC, which was held for three days and concluded, last Sunday witnessed the participation of over 3000 athletes of International Schools. Lyceum International School Wattala emerged victorious for the seventh consecutive year beating close contenders Gateway College Colombo and Lyceum International School Nugegoda.
This is the eighth year that Lyceum International School Wattala won this championship which is a remarkable achievement that no other international school has achieved so far. The considerable difference between Lyceum Wattala and the other schools is a clear indication of the school’s athletic dominance. The hard work and the dedication of the young and promising athletes of Lyceum Wattala made it possible for them to dominate the medal tally from the first day to the third, thus enabling them to top the medal tally of a total of 85 medals — 43 gold, 29 silver and 13 bronze medals.
Gateway College Colombo trailing in second place was able to earn 17 gold, 23 silver and 11 bronze medals while Lyceum Nugegoda ended up at third place having won 10 gold, nine silver and 17 bronze medals. Lyceum International School Panadura secured the fourth place while Lyceum International School Ratnapura finished in sixth place.
Lyceum Wattala athletes were in high spirits from day one, leading the medal table, winning many field events as well as track events, making impressive performances and establishing new records.
Nine New Meet records were established by the Lyceum Wattala athletes. They are the
Under-15 Girls’ Shot Putt by Lubna Morseth, Under-9 Girls’ Long Jump by Shenali Bastian
(60 meters), the Under-17 Girls’ Triple Jump by Rebecca Silva, the Under-15 Girls’ Discus Throw by Rushmi Heenkenda, the Under-15 Girls’ Javelin Throw by Asha Nisma, the Under-19 Girls’ Discus Throw by Shilpa Fernando, the Under-17 Boys’ Long Jump by Shehan Wisamperuma and the Under-17 Boy’s 4x100metre relay event where Daham Atapattu, Shehan Wisamperuma, Navod Naveendra and Nisal Swarnachandra were part of the team.
On the final day, the Lyceum Wattala relay teams were a delight to watch as they brought glory to their school by winning a majority of the relay events adding to the final medal count. Several championships too, were won by Lyceum Wattala athletes.
Athletes from the island wide Lyceum School Network competed at the athletic meet, showing not only their individual talents but the talents harboured by their respective schools. The 15th annual ISAC meet was a testament of the sports prowess of the students of Lyceum International Schools and their dedication to achieving excellence in the fields of athletics alongside their education. – NA
