Three grand old men of Sri Lankan architecture, who set the tone and blazed trails for generations to come, were recognized at the Bawa Awards with lifetime contribution awards; two of them posthumously.

Laki Senanayake

Laki Senanayake (1937-2021), was informed of the impending honour just before his sad demise in May and as Chairman of the Bawa Trust Channa Daswatte said, Laki’s last letter to the Trust was accepting the award. A brilliantly prolific sculptor and artist who featured in many a classic Bawa building, among his many standout works are the chandelier in the Parliament styled after palm fronds, and the iconic staircase at the Lighthouse Hotel, both Bawa buildings.

Dr. Roland Silva

Dr. Roland Silva (1933-2020), architect and archaeologist inspired generations of Lankan architects and archaelogists ‘to pursue inquiry and scholarship.’ He held many prominent positions in his long and distinguished career — as Commissioner of Archaeology, Founder/Director General of the Central Cultural Fund and  President of the World Body of Conservators amongst many others.

Dr.K.Poologa-sundram

Dr. K. Poologasundram, Bawa’s partner at Edwards, Reid and Begg, was honoured for his pre-eminent contribution to the fields of Architecture & Engineering “through which he paved the ground for generations of Sri Lankan architects and engineers to innovate and adapt to local contexts”.
