Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) yesterday confirmed that seven members of the national women’s team, including six players, tested positive for COVID-19 during the ICC World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe, one of the countries where the new COVID-19 variant Omicron has been detected.

The International Cricket Council (CCC) called off the tournament after some countries imposed travel restrictions on visitors from a number of African nations, including host Zimbabwe, following the discovery of a new COVID-19 variant in South Africa. The remainder of the Sri Lanka women’s team will now return via Dubai. Those who tested positive and the doctor on tour will stay back till they test negative.

“The ICC is planning immediate evacuation of teams to Dubai from where they will be sent to their respective countries,” said Ashley de Silva, SLC CEO. “Accordingly, our players, barring those who tested positive, will travel to Dubai and then to Sri Lanka. We will work with local health authorities and follow all protocols, including placing them in quarantine if needed.”

Sri Lanka were to play West Indies yesterday but this was called off at the last minute when a member of the Sri Lankan support staff tested positive, increasing the total number of Sri Lanka team positive cases to seven.

The ICC said the cancellation of the match between Sri Lanka and the West Indies was due to a support staff member of the Sri Lanka women’s team testing positive.

Three Sri Lanka women’s squad members first tested positive in Harare last Sunday and were isolated. This was following a screening of the entire team after one player displayed mild symptoms. It was done in keeping with bio-secure protocols which were in place to ensure the safety of participants in the nine-team event which got underway in Harare last Sunday.

Two of the players had mild symptoms, whilst the third was asymptomatic. All three were isolated and are receiving appropriate medical care. SLC made an official request to ICC to either postpone or call off the competition, amid fear that COVID-19 cases could increase in days to come. The event was subsequently called off.

Sri Lanka’s entourage includes 20 players and 10 support staff.
