Despite Colombo given a flying start by their openers, bad light forcing an early stump made the hosts wait for its second successive win versus Kandy yesterday at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

Chasing 260 for win, hosts were sitting pretty at 114 for no loss, with both the openers, Nipun Dananjaya and Krishan Sanjula, notching up fifty’s. The former, except for an odd first innings cheap score, continued from where he left after scoring a match-winning century in their first win last week, in the National Super Provincial four-dayer.

Colombo is now in need of 145 to win.

Visitors Kandy winning the toss, and batting first, on the back of Oshada Fernando’s fine century with the aid of one six and 15 boundaries, posted 241. Though the home side in their first essay fell short of gaining a lead, their bowlers ensured Kandy does not go to town with the slender lead.

In the second innings of Kandy, it was Captain Kamindu Mendis’s turn to hit a hundred, nearly enabling them to go past their own first innings score.

Chief scores:
  •   Colombo: 218 all out (73.5) (Lahiru Madushanka 80 n.o., Lakshitha Manasinghe 53, Asitha Fernando 3/38, Ashian Daniel 3/51) and 114 no loss (29) (Nipun Dananjaya 59 n.o., Krishan Sanjula 52 n.o.,)
  •   Kandy: 241 all out (71) (Oshada Fernando 105, Kasun Vidura 43, Prabath Jayasuriya 3/47, Lakshitha Manasinghe 3/59) and 235 (71.2) (Kamindu Mendis 114, Kasun Rajitha 5/48)
