Big-time electricity users to pay more; Power Ministry to present Cabinet proposal
The Power and Energy Ministry will submit a Cabinet proposal for an electricity tariff hike for those who consume a high number of units.
Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said the Ceylon Electricity Board had called for a rate revision for high electricity consumers such as companies, industries, and hotels.
He pointed out that the rates which remained unchanged for nine years should at least be subjected to some review. He added that even the CEB had requested a hike. The minister said the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) had also made suggestions regarding a rate increase, but it gave no approval for it.
Once the Cabinet approved the increase, the ministry would send the proposal to the PUCSL for approval.
The minister said the rate hike would not affect low-income families and those who consume less electricity. “The tariff hike would be revised in such a way that it would largely target high-end users,” the minister said.
He said the high-end users such as factories, companies and hotels would have to pay three or four times their current bill under the new rates. Mr. Wijeskera said such high-end consumers should go for solar energy which could not only reduce their electricity bill but also lessen the power generation burden on the state.
PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratnayake told the Sunday Times he had not yet been informed of the price revision and therefore he was unable to comment.
