Doctor dies due to suspected petrol poisoning

A doctor at Peradeniya Sirimavo Bandaranaike Children’s Hospital has died while undergoing ECMO surgery at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital amid suspicion that an incident of sucking petrol through a pipe may have contributed to his death.

The 30-year-old deceased was Tennakoon Mudiyanselage Chintaka Deepal Amarasooriya.

Postmortem tests had revealed that a shock resulting from the entrance of a germ into blood while in a pneumonia state, to be the cause of death. City Coroner Chandrasena Lokuge held the inquiry into the death at the Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

The deceased doctor was the father of one child. Postmortem examinations had revealed that after having undergone treatments for COVID-19, he had been infected with influenza just weeks before. Having stayed a few days in a petrol queue, it was suspected that he had used his mouth to suck petrol through a pipe, to use petrol in his motorcycle.

After that, having been infected with pneumonia, he was admitted to the Peradeniya Hospital. Afterwards, he was admitted to Kandy Hospital and later to the Karapitiya Hospital to undergo an ECMO surgery on Monday (July 11). He died on Thursday morning.

The postmortem examinations were being conducted by forensic doctor Janaki Varusahennadi.
