Rizly Illyas reelected to lead SLR until 2024

Rizly Illyas was reelected uncontested as President of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) for the forthcoming tenure of two years at its Annual General Meeting held at the National Olympic Committee Auditorium yesterday. All office bearers were elected uncontested and will hold office until 2024.
Former Secretary of SLR, Group Captain Nalin de Silva, a brilliant player who turned out for Air Force and Sri Lanka, was elected as Deputy President, while H.A.U.D. Hettiarachchi was elected as Vice President.
The holder of the record for most points scored during a club season, SSP Nizam Jamaldeen, also a well renowned and respected referee, will function as the Secretary of SLR for the next couple of years, while the Treasurer’s post was filled by Dinesh Anthony Perera.
The nominees for the positions were finalised on July 21, with the independent Election Committee comprising retired High Court Judges G.S. Edirisinghe and K.H. Sumithrapala and former Secretary of Sri Lanka Administrative Services B.D. Dahanayake ascertaining the eligibility of all nominees, who were entitled to 44 votes.
Accordingly, all Provincial Rugby Unions – Ruhuna, Central, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Wayamba, Uva and North Central – were entitled to vote as per the conclusion of the Election Committee who observed the sections of the SLR Constitution before making their decision.
The new SLR administration will now obtain the liberty to function without further hindrances in conducting their domestic competitions calendar and training and development programmes, which the outgoing SLR administration was prevented from completing due to various administrative issues and other reasons. However, the newly appointed administration takes charge of SLR with a clear mandate and sans any protests, opposition or legal obstructions.
