SPC to make emergency purchases of essential drugs

The Health Ministry is to make emergency purchases of medical supplies because of a delay in obtaining medicines under an Indian credit line facility of US$ 130 million, officials said.
Accordingly, the ministry is preparing a list of 300 pharmaceuticals and will go ahead with the purchase in view of an acute shortage of these essential drugs.
Some of the reasons cited for the delay in purchasing medical supplies from India are the difficulty in finding suitable Indian suppliers, delay in registering the suppliers in Sri Lanka and the delay in payments to exporters by the State Bank of India.
As an emergency step, instructions have been issued to the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) to use the money allocated to it to buy these essential drugs by the end of this month. Under the plan, the purchases are to be made for the next two to three months.
The private sector has been slow in the imports in the recent months in view of the fluctuating prices of medicines.
As a result, some of the drugs have been in short supply in the past few months.
