Local businesses, past students of rural schools and well-wishers are coming together to provide food for school children badly affected by the food shortage in Sri Lanka.
All primary students are being given the necessary nutrition by the National Nutrition Programme (NNP) of the Government, Jaffna’s Zonal Education Director M. Rathakrishnan said.
The Government will provide the nutrition programme Rs. 60 per student, an increase from Rs. 30 per student, earlier.
Several businesses in the North and East are providing food for children.
Some schools from the rural areas have their own trust funds to spend. Sri Somaskanda College in Puttur is using its trust funds to distribute food to students.
Mr Rathakrishnan also said schools in the Jaffna zone have been asked to start agricultural activities.
“Providing adequate food to school children is the responsibility of the society,” the Northern Province Governor Jeevan Thiagarajah said.
“Rs.60 per student by the national nutrition programme is not enough with the inflation rate,” said the Batticaloa Zonal Education Director Ms. Kulendrakumar.
No instances have been noted of students from Northern and Eastern provinces fainting or having illness. While there were reports from Thantirimale that children had fainted at Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Ananda Vidyalaya and Siddartha Vidyalaya.
Fifty three schools out of 65 have been brought under the NNP in the Batticaloa zone.
Ms. Kulendrakumar said Surya Rice Mills in Batticaloa had been providing rice to all the schools.
