Trumpeting the sweeter side of the trumpet
View(s):The Sri Lankan born, Dutch-Norwegian trumpetist, conductor and composer, Hans Sampath Blok will perform a varied programme highlighting the lyrical side of the trumpet, with his collaborator on the piano Johann Peiris on November 19 at the Goethe Institut. The concert is presented by the Chamber Music Society of Colombo (CMSC), in association with the Goethe-Institut, Norwegian Composers Society and premier co-sponsors Baurs and Tokyo Cement Company.
Through the ages the trumpet has often been regarded as an instrument that with its sharp andpenetrating sound, is best suited for ceremonial and military functions. Recent composers though have started to notice the sweeter side of the instrument, yet the bombastic image of the trumpet remains with the broader public.
The programme will include the music of Handel, Vivani, Franck, Albinoni, Bach, Goedicke and Stanley.
As a performer Hans is mostly active in the early music and free improvisation scene. Beside modern trumpet, he also plays natural trumpet, trombone, horn, euphonium, cornetto and recorder. With multiple degrees in performance and composition, his works are commissioned and performed by orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe. He conducts several contemporary music ensembles in Norway, and has been guest conductor in Ecuador, Latvia and Malaysia.
The concert will be on November 19 from 7p.m. to 8.15 p.m. at the Goethe-Institut Hall, 39 Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7. Tickets (unreserved) priced at Rs. 1500 are now available at the Goethe-Institut gate.
