Commonwealth Chess Championships in Sri Lanka
The Commonwealth Chess Championships 2022 will be held in Sri Lanka from November 14 to 22 at the Citrus Hotel in Waskaduwa. On behalf of the Commonwealth Chess Association, the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) is organising the event.
A total of 275 players from eight countries have confirmed their participation at the nine-day event. So far India, Maldives, South Africa, England, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will take part in the event where 13 Grand Masters, two Women Grand Masters, six International Masters and three WIMs have already confirmed their participation.
The event consists of an Open event and 12 Youth events from the age category of Under-8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years for girls and boys.
“It is an honour for Sri Lanka to host such a great event here and the CFSL will offer a cash award of approximately six millions for the winners,” The president of CFSL, Luxman Wijesuriya said.
The Sri Lankan contingent will be led by International Master elect Susal de Silva of Nalanda College, also the national champion. The Asian Under-10 Girls champion, Oshini Devindya Gunawardena will be a prominent figure at the event. Sri Lanka will field a team of 17 players under 17 categories.
