Wycherley honours Oshini for winning U-10 Asian Youth Chess Championship
View(s):Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana of Wycherley International School represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Youth Chess Championship 2022 held in Bali Indonesia from October 13 to 22. A total of
451 players from 20 Asian countries competed in the event in 12 categories and at this event Oshini Gunawardhana emerged champion in the Under-10 category and she is now the Asian Youth Chess Championship of her age category.
She scored 8.5 points during the nine-round event where Iran’s Bahar Mirzakhani was the only opponent who was able to hold her for a draw in the eighth round. Oshini commenced the tournament as the third ranked player but dominated from the start.
She secured the championship before the final round where she led the ranking table with 1.5 points in the eighth round. She also achieved the Woman Candidate Master title. Oshini is the reigning Under-10 world champion after winning the World Youth Online Chess Championship 2021. Oshini was trained by Akila Kavinda.
Oshini is a student of Wycherley International School Colombo currently following the Cambridge International curriculum in Grade 3. The Principal – Mr. Dayan D.L Fernando together with the Vice Principal Mrs. Nelum Fernando, Headmistress of the Primary School Ms. Oshadi Wijayasuriya, Sports Coordinators Ramesh Fernando, Junanita Fernando and the Head Prefects of the school welcomed Oshini on her arrival to the country after winning this award. The school also organised a felicitation ceremony on October 25 to celebrate her victory at the Asian Youth Chess Championship 2022 held in Indonesia.
