Residents of some villages in Puttalam District are continuing their struggles against wild elephants that destroy crops and their fragile homes.

Some in Puttalam, Nawagattegama, Karuwalagaswewa, Maha Kumbukkadawala, Wanathavilluwa, and Pallama divisional secretary areas have resorted to lighting fires. The residents say 20,000 acres are at risk from elephant raiders.

Conflicts have worsened after a private company cleared 15,000 acres of forest land near Thabbowa sanctuary frequented by elephants. The animals then started to move to other areas in Puttalam, the villagers said.

They said the animals wreck banana and coconut cultivations and that 10,000 acres of coconut cultivations had been destroyed in the past 10 years.
