Two patients receive kidneys of Pera student who died tragically
Sachini Galappatti, an undergraduate at the University of Peradeniya’s Dental Sciences Faculty, tragically passed away on October 30.
The 23-year-old’s kidneys had been donated by her parents to the Kandy National Hospital.
A university official said she was hit by a vehicle while walking along the Galaha-Peradeniya road to the Ramanathan Residence Hall of the university, where she was staying.
The official said she had been admitted to the Peradeniya Hospital and was then transferred to the Kandy National Hospital’s Neurosurgery Unit.
The consulting surgeons at the unit could not save Sachini’s life as there were critical injuries to her brain. The medical team had also informed her parents that she was medically “brain dead” and nothing more could
be done.
The team also suggested to her parents to donate her kidneys for transplant surgeries, which they agreed to do and they signed the neccesary documents thereafter.
Consulting surgeon Dr. Charitha Fernando had been able to transplant Sachini’s kidneys in a 47-year-old resident of Matale and a 27-year-old resident of Ratnapura.
Medical professionals at the
Kandy Hospital praised Sachini’s parents for their generosity
and kindness.
Sachini’s funeral took place in her home town of Tangalle.
