Kiran Vairavanathan represented Sri Lanka at the Australia Open Asian Qualifiers, held in Yokkaichi, Japan from November 13 to 16. Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) was requested to send in four nominations for the Australian Open Qualifiers, based on their performances and rakings, but in compliance with the tournament regulations and requirements.
Accordingly SLTA sent the names of Kiran Vairavanathan and Zaidh Zihar in the boys segment and girls members Sajida Razick and Vishmi Serasinghe, out of which, Kiran, Sri Lanka’s highest ITF Under-18 ranked player was invited to compete in the Road to Australian Open Asian Qualifiers in Japan held this week.
The winner of this event will be granted an Australian Open Main Draw place in the Uner-18 event next year. Kiran made the finals of both Singles and Doubles events of the ITF Under-18 tournaments held earlier this month at the SLTA. Kiran will travel to Nagoya, Japan with his coach Guyanga Weerasekera hoping to be the first Sri Lankan junior to qualify for the Australian Open.
The 2023 Dunlop Road to the Australian Open Juniors, is a co-organised event by Dunlop, the Australian Open ball partner, the Japanese Tennis Association and Tennis Australia. Only 16 boys and 16 girls will be invited from Asia/Oceania countries to enter and compete in the event. The Singles winner in each event will be awarded with a main draw Singles wildcard into the Australian Open Junior Championships 2023.
