Mind Fogging & Fighter Blades
View(s):The viper blades in my jeep are not in a good state that I almost find it difficult to drive during rainy days due to the fog that builds in the windscreen. When our eye glasses or our windscreens are fogged it makes it impossible to move forward. Similarly, there are a lot of people who stagnate in life because they are unable to move forward as their minds are fogged with a variety of thoughts. Two of the main reasons for mind fogging is excessive concentration on the failures of the past as well as their fear for the future.
A cousin brother of mine who attended one of the best schools in the country lost almost all his hair and the remaining hair turned gray as a result of excessively depressing thoughts. Every time he is going through a major struggle I used to advise him on what needs to be done, yet it seemed like he was unable to implement that advice. After a few days he calls me back again and confesses that if he had listened to my advice he would not have fallen to such a state again. Similarly, there are many people who know what is right, yet they find it difficult to adhere to it as they are glued to their fears and worries.
Worrying on past failures is like deciding not to step into a vehicle your entire life just because you met with an accident whilst learning to drive. It is similar to the unwise decision you make to avoid drinking milk in your entire life because you had a stomach ache after consuming milk the last time. I met a person who was depressed. I asked him about his marriage and I was told that he would never marry again because his ex-wife cheated on him. The minds of a lot of people are fogged due to the bad experiences that they have had in the past.
The question we need to ask ourselves is “Should we treat our wounds and move ahead or should we keep scratching the same wound over and over again until we die?” This is the reason we must train our children to constantly try even though they may fail at certain points. It is easy to train a brain at its early stages, therefore make your brain understand that life is a progression and the world’s failures are actually learnings.
The Fear one holds on the future is one such powerful mind Fog that halts us from moving forward. When I started life for the second time after a disastrous first inning, I made a firm decision to challenge my fears. Every time my marketing guru Failan Saleem asked a student to come forward for a presentation I took a step forward to go in front and challenge my fears whilst many students looked away as they were afraid of being rejected or bullied over a mistake they might make during the presentation. Your growth is in your hand, if you choose not to water, fertilise or prune it, then it will certainly not grow.
Making a decision not to challenge your fears is as though you are not going for athletic practices because your shoes are ugly and they are not branded. The acceptance of others is not more than a birthday card. It is just a wish and it has no power to mould you, strengthen you, correct you and mould you into the person you want to be. Some people avoid going to five star hotels just because they do not know how to use the cutlery. These people remain prisoners of their own fears and lose the opportunity of enhancing their life standards. I know a Chairman of a company who does not attend high impact business forums as he cannot speak in English. This fear has hindered him from receiving many amazing opportunities to network and develop his business to the next level.
Both worry and fear are two dangerous mists that will Fog your vision in life. Uncertainties will always be there, we cannot uproot them from our lives. If you look back in life you will see that most of the things you worried about have not taken place and you have destroyed hours of your precious time on worrying. If you have practiced to your best possible level, there is no point of worrying the night before the match. Worrying the night before the match will certainly steal your opportunity of having a peaceful dinner with your family and it would also hammer your confidence. One of the most surprising things about worrying is that it generally appears the very moment you attempt to do something productive. When I have an enormous challenge ahead of me, I usually spend my night happily with my family. Unless a fearful thought circuit will grow within me which will go onto steal the present and grow within me.
The more weights you lift the more muscles you will grow: similarly, the more fearful you feel the more your brain becomes fearful, the more you worry the more your brain becomes worried. Neuroscience predominantly discusses three aspects: first Developmental Neuroscience which describes how the brain forms, grows and changes. Therefore, the way you think and the way you cultivate your thinking decides the direction your brain grows. Even though your parents are Sinhalese, if you were born and raised in Japan you will speak Japanese and not Sinhalese. The more you submerge your brain in fear, the more it will become fearful and the more you dip it with worry the more it will become a worrisome mind. Therefore, the only overcoming avenue is to fight worry and challenge the fears.
Secondly, it is the Cognitive Neuroscience, which is all about how the brain creates and controls your thoughts, languages and your memory. Unless you continually tame and control your destructive thoughts, they will work out until it becomes a gigantic destructive thought that will take control of your mind and your central processing unit.
The third aspect of Neuroscience is Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience that explores genes, proteins and other molecules that guide the functioning of neurons. The more you worry and fear, the more the stress hormones are released, it lowers the possibility of calming down.
If there is a way in, then there definitely is a way out. The first act of getting over your fogged mind is understanding what exactly fogs your mind. Who is in control of your mind? The bad black dog or the good white dog? There is also a cognitive therapy tool known as “thought inventory” where we have to first list down an inventory of our thoughts in two columns. One with the positive thoughts and the other with the negative thoughts we get. Once you have a clear picture of what is stored in your mind, it will direct you towards cleaning and organising it.
There is another tool that I have created known as the “Thought Direction Management (TDM)” where the very first thing you do as you wake up every morning is to practice directing your thoughts towards the good you already have in your life. This rejects the negativity from entering into your mind gates. Your mind is fresh after a seven hour sleep and it definitely throws out fearful and worrisome thoughts that were heavily thought of and stored in your subconscious the previous night. So one of the most powerful tools to invade mind fogging is to capture the roaring negativity at the very beginning of its functioning by directing your thoughts towards the good that you possess. To be honest the good we have is immeasurable compared to the very little bad we have gone through. Just count and see if I’m correct or incorrect.
