Education Minister Susil Premjayantha has requested the Public Administration Ministry to amend the circular regarding the dress code for public sector employees—excluding teachers.

The move came after teachers began wearing casual wear to schools after the circular to the public sector employees was amended giving them the opportunity wear appropriate clothing.

Minister Premajayantha said the request was to exclude teachers from the circular which would effectively mean that female teachers would be required to wear sarees.

This week, teacher trade unions carried out a campaign asking teachers to come to work with any suitable clothing. However, there were objections to the campaign from various people, including parents, against the unions’ actions. -DWI
